After EA acquired the NFL license from 2005-2020 and the NCAA football license from 2005-2011, it did make a play for the NBA a couple of months later. The NBA shot down the proposal in order to have more ways to market itself to fans. Although EA is the world's largest videogame company, its sports games haven't fared well against the 2K series since it debuted on the Sega Dreamcast. The 2K games were critical hits, but didn't sell comparable units until the classic ESPN NFL 2K5 dropped. That game is one of the best football games ever made, and was single-handledly responsible for EA's aggressive buying. For now, the NBA won't let EA get them, but who knows?
